The Threefold Law

A Celtic Triple Spiral SymbolThe Threefold Law says that everything that you send out will be returned threefold. This is also called The Rule of Three, or The Law of Return. It is similar to the principle of Karma. Most pagan religions believe in reincarnation rather than an eternal afterlife. This rule describes the effects that our actions have on ourselves. This is part of the reason that the Pagan Rede guides our actions.

Many people focus on the Rule of Three as little more than a financial tool. This is a very limited interpretation. As with so many things in paganism, this rule has deeper meanings. Not only do your actions come back threefold, but so do your thoughts and attitudes. This is one reason that many of the "positive thinking" systems that are available work so well.

Pentacle with VinesIt is also the reason many peoples attempts at magically changing their lives fail. As an example, a person will cast a spell to lose weight, saying "I am skinny" for an hour. They'll then spend the next month thinking (or even saying) "I am so fat". Which do you think has more power? Our attitudes and beliefs are reinforced by the Rule of Three.
