Love Spells

Love spells are one of the most sought-after types of magic. Many Pagans immediately dismiss the entire concept as unethical. The fact is that there are many types of these spells, most of which are ethically and morally acceptable to the majority of Pagan Traditions.

The most frequently sought love magic is the type of coercive spell that most Pagans object to. These spells focus on a single, pre-selected target. The target is forced into a powerful infatuation with the caster (or client, if the spell is being cast for someone else). This happens regardless of any previous relationship or circumstances. The level of coercion in these spells, and the interference with free will, make this type of spell unethical to most Pagans. These spells almost always ends badly. The ways in which it can go wrong are far too numerous to list, but Karma always prevails.

Love Spells are also used in existing relationships. These spells can be either destructive or constructive in nature. Destructive spells are used to beak apart existing relationships. Most people instantly think of these as wrong or dangerous, but some (like spells to Let Go of Unhealthy Relationships) are positive and highly ethical in nature. Constructive spells help keep existing relationships together. On the surface, these are ethical, but some of these spells impinge on free will (like a spell to keep your lover from cheating on you). The morality of these spells it very hard to pin down, and usually must be addressed on a case-by-case basis.

Many also seek passion or sex spells. These spells may be coercive, depending on the intent and willingness of participants. Unethical uses of these spells, like those that force infatuation on the target, will force people into passionate acts in opposition to their free will. This has the same ethical position as using any other deceitful method of enforced consent - it is wrong. Other types of these spells, however, can be helpful to existing relationships. Couple seeking greater intimacy or renewal of earlier passions might use this type of spell to remove obstacles from their paths. Between these two extremes, there are those who are looking for intimate company, without targeting any one particular person. These spells vary in effect: they might call like minded people, remove inhibitions, or show the caster where to find partners. This is a slippery area in magical ethics: at what point is free will interfered with?

Like passion spells, spells for finding new relationships can be ethical or not depending on how they are used. Of all the various types of Love Spells, this class is most likely to be ethical in nature. There are two major type of this spell. The first type are designed to guide the caster/client to a loving relationship. This can be via divination, by making the caster/client more attractive, or by opening the universe to the possibility of this kind of relationship. The other type draws love to the caster/client, often in a non-specific manner. This loving energy makes it more likely that a new relationship will form if a compatible partner is encountered.
