Divination, Intuition and Fortune Telling
Divination is a common practice among Pagans. It is the art of using the past, the present, and you own intuition to predict the most likely future outcome of current events. It can be called fortune telling, foreseeing, foretelling, prognosticating, predicting the future, augury, or soothsaying. Whatever you call it, it is used to guide our present actions to create the best possible future for ourselves and the world around us.
Like magic, Divination is a means of using the universal energy all around us to guide and improve all of our lives. Unlike magic, fortune telling is a receptive technique. Magic attempts to guide the universe down a path we wish it to take. Fortune telling opens our intuition to the universe for it to guide us.
Since the future is not yet written, divination can be a very tricky proposition. Simply believing something will happen can change a persons behavior, thus affecting the predicted outcome. This is, of course, the very purpose of seeing into the future.
One of the major reasons that fortune telling is put down by non-believers is that it seldom speaks in absolutes. It is a guide, not a map. It can tell you how best to act, but not exactly what to do, where to do it and especially when to do so.
Time is one of the hardest things to pin down in divination. This is partly due to the nature of time: it is surprisingly subjective. "A long time" can mean an hour waiting in line, a few years at a job, or centuries when studying historic trends.
It is also partly due to the nature of fortune telling itself. To see the trends that will lead to the future, one must step outside of linear time. In this state, "normal" time references lose meaning. Pinning events down to a particular time is virtually impossible under these circumstances.
Divination Techniques
There are dozens of techniques that are used to see into the future. A few of these are presented below:
| Cartomancy |
The use of cards to tap into intuition and see into the future. These can be standard playing cards, Tarot cards, or other Oracular Decks |
| Tarot |
A specific type of Cartomancy that uses a specialized 78 card deck |
| Tasseomancy |
The art of reading tea leaves. More popular in the past, when tea was always shipped loose and often ended up in cups |
| Psychometry |
The ability to receive psychic impressions from about the history of objects |
| Runes |
A method that uses symbols etched onto stones, bones or sticks. The most commonly sold Rune set is the Elder Futhark. |
| Omens |
The reading of natural events. Urban Pagans will sometimes see omens on TV or newspapers. |
| Dowsing |
A folk magic method of finding things (usually, but not always, hidden underground water) by feeling the "dipping" of a Dowsing Rod |
| Pendulum |
The use of a free swinging pendulum to answer questions. The swinging patterns provide the answers sought. |
| Scrying |
Also called Gazing, this is the act of looking into a crystal, mirror or pool of water to see the patterns of the future. |
| Astrology |
Comparing the positions of the planets and the stars to understand how a person should best react to the current situation. |
| I Ching |
A chinese method of reading the future that involves tossing coins and reading relevant passages in a specific book. |
| Chiromancy |
Commonly called Palm Reading, this is the art of using the shape and pattern of the lines in a person's hand to predict what they will de best at in life. |
| Necromancy |
The art of communicating with the dead. Necromancy is often viewed as evil, but this is at least in part due to the Mass media's representation of it as violent, malevolent, and coercive. |
| Clairsentience |
This is the term for simply knowing things without any other tools. It includes Clairvoyance (Sight), Clairaudience (Hearing), and Psychometry among others. |
As with magic, the only way to improve is to study and practice. It is best to try readings using various tools for various people. It is most important to remember that the tools are only to aid your intuition. There will be times when what you see differs form the traditional interpretation for your particular tools. Always trust your intuition.
There may also be times when you feel the need to consult a Professional Psychic. This can be for many reasons. There is no reason to be embarrassed or ashamed by this; even the strongest of psychics will occasionally need outside assistance.
