Amulets

Amulets are small items that are meant to be carried. They are magically charged with power to aid in certain tasks. There are many names given to small, portable objects that are used in magic. There is a great deal of debate about what these names mean. Several of these are discussed below.

Words Used to Describe Magical Objects

An Isis Pendant that can be used as a TalismanA talisman is an object that is decorated with symbols of power. It is often both a magical and decorative object that is meant to be displayed.

Juju is a term from Western African tribal traditions. It describes both an object the carries magical power and the power that object carries.

A fetish, in magical terms, is an object that has magical or spiritual powers. This is most often associated with shamanistic traditions.

Related to fetishes, idols are images or objects that represents a deity. Idols are more often prayed to than used as magical objects.

The word charm describes both something worn or carried for its magic power and a spell or chant, It more often refers to a spell than a magical object.

Amulets are small objects worn or carried to ward off harm or to bring good fortune.

How to Make Amulets

Recipes from The Wolf and Raven Grimiore

A Fertility AmuletThe amulets that I make are nondescript objects that are usually kept hidden (or at least not flaunted). They are usually made of cloth and hold herbs, crystals and other small items that aid in the effectiveness of their magic. They incorporate Color Magic, Crystal Power and Herb Magic in addition to simple Visualization.

I have outlined the materials and process for three different purposes. First, you should gather the appropriate materials as outlined below:

To Attract Wealth or Money

  • A five inch square of green cloth
  • A length of green fabric (not plastic) ribbon about 13 inches long
  • About a tablespoon ounce of Magical Herb Money Blend
  • A tiny piece of Pyrite or Malachite (I use chip beads)
    • If you can't find appropriate crystals, a penny will work well
  • A cotton ball and essential oils of Basil, Pine, Clove and Cinnamon (optional)
    • note: if you do not use oils and cotton, increase herb blend to about 3 tablespoons

Improve Health or Healing

  • A five inch square of green or white cloth
  • A length of white fabric (not plastic) ribbon about 13 inches long
  • About 1 tablespoon of Magical Herb Health/Healing Blend
  • A tiny piece of quartz (I use chip beads)
    • If you are trying to heal a particular illness, you can and should substitute or add a crystal specific to that illness (for example, sunstone for cancer or bloodstone for blood related illnesses)
  • A cotton ball and essential oils of vanilla and sage (optional)
    • note: if you do not use oils and cotton, increase herb blend to about 3 tablespoons

Bring Love or Passion

  • A five inch square of red cloth
  • A length of red fabric (not plastic) ribbon about 13 inches long
    • If you are interested in romantic love rather than passionate love, try using pink fabric and ribbon instead of red
  • About 1 tablespoon of Magical Herb Love Blend
    • Depending on your purpose, you can also use or add Lust, Passion, Attract a Male or Attract a Female Herb Blend(s).
  • A tiny piece of garnet, ruby, and rose quartz (I use chip beads)
    • Garnet and ruby draw passionate love, rose quartz draws romantic love
  • A cotton ball and essential oils of cinnamon and vanilla (optional)
    • note: if you do not use oils and cotton, increase herb blend to about 3 tablespoons

Creation Process

Once you have gathered the materials for your amulet, place the cloth on your altar or workspace face down. If you are using cotton and essential oils, put the cotton in the middle of the cloth and add 2-3 drops of each oil to the cotton. Then add the crystal(s) and herbs.

Money AmuletCarefully bring the corners of your cloth together. Gather the edges of the fabric into a "tail" at the top of the bundle and use the ribbon to tie it tightly in place. It is now ready for charging. Focus on your intent and visualize energy flowing into the amulet.

Aside from the simple method I described here, you can also sew square sachets, pillows, or poppets. You can and should adjust the materials used to reflect your specific purpose. If you are after a specific goal, include an image or symbol of that goal. If it is for a person, include something personal from them. The techniques here are not absolute; let your own intuition guide you. Remember that it is your energy and will that guide the magic.

Final thoughts

Amulets are useful ways of easily passing energy from yourself to someone else. They are also very useful as a means of taking excess energy that you have now and storing for use later. I make frequent use of these simple amulets and I hope that you will to.
